Losing My Religion

This is one of my takes on the Madonna with child. The image of the Black Madonna is worshiped throughout Europe, with the most examples of centuries old work in Germany and Italy.

Parts of Africa and Asia also display the Black Madonna. My interpretation has a folk art element. I made free use of various found objects. Their clothes are made from hand painted pleather.

In 2015, one of the oldest Black churches in America was assaulted, with nine of its members ruthlessly murdered. Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1817. Due to the 1831 Nat Turner's slave revolt, the white controlled Charleston city prohibited all Black churches from holding active prayer sessions. Because of these rules placed on them, the AME parishioners met in secrecy until the close of the Civil War. More than 200 years later, the unfortunate madness reared it's crazed head with this attack.
